TAKING MEASUREMENT FOR A BUCKLE COLLAR   (Always use a cloth tape or a string)

Measure the portion of your dog's neck where the collar will naturally rest.  Then add 3" or so, and that's the size collar you need.

So say, your dogs neck is 10 inches, you should look for a collar of at least 13" so that you can size it down to fit.  If you have a puppy, go for at least 5" or more so that the collar will last a while before you have to buy a new one!  Once on your dog, make sure you can fit a couple of fingers in between the dogs neck and the collar.

TAKING MEASUREMENT FOR A MARTINGALE COLLAR   (Always use a cloth tape, or a string)

1. Measure around the biggest part of the head  #1.
2. Measure the narrowest part of your dog's head #2.
3. Measure your dog's neck at the midpoint (widest part) of the neck #3.

Choose the smallest size collar in the store that fits the smallest and biggest dog's measurement. (If you are having difficulties figuring out, email me at anne@dingdog.com with the sizes.

Why?

Measurement #1.  A Martingale collar needs to be big enough to fit over your dog's head.  A proper measurement here will ensure that your dog will not be able to back out of the collar.

Measurement #2.  A martingale collar needs to cinch up tight around your dog's neck when the dog pulls, without choking the dog.  For longer-haired dogs, make sure you measure as close to the skin as you can to ensure a proper fit, otherwise, the extra hair may cause the collar to slip off.

Measurement #3.  The collar needs to sit in the middle of your dog's neck so that it doesn't hang down too far at any point and get the dog tangled up.  For dogs with a lot of hair, measure the midpoint loosely so the collar will rest comfortably on the fur.

Choose the smallest size between Small, Medium, Large or X Large that fits within the 3 measurements range to ensure that your collar fits perfectly.  Keep in mind that your collar needs to be large enough to slip over the head but not too large to fit correctly.

TAKING MEASUREMENT FOR A HARNESS

Girth Measurement:

1.  Find your dog's girth, which is the widest point of your dog's chest and rib cage area. You are measuring the circumference of the body just behind the front legs, like measuring for a "belt.  "Harness size measurements are based on girth, which can vary according to breed.  Some dogs, like Boxers, are more deep-chested than others.  While our harnesses provide allowances for a customized fit, it is important to accurately measure your dog's girth for the best size possible.

 2.  Stand over your dog and place one end of the tape measure on his spine, just above the widest part of his rib cage. With your other hand, wrap the tape measure behind his front legs and around his body, going underneath the widest part of his rib cage.  Place this end next to the beginning of the tape.  Put your thumb on the number that meets up with the beginning of the tape measure.  The higher number is the girth measurement. You can then pick the proper harness size.

Please note that the measurement is the best way to get the correct size.
